The first concept that comes to mind when we think of orthodontics is dental braces. In this context, dental braces are among the most frequently used and most effective orthodontic treatments. Dental braces are also categorized within themselves and have different methods for different needs.
The type of dental braces to be used in dental braces treatment varies according to the type of problem and the patient’s budget. Dental braces are divided into four types.
1-Metal Braces: Metal braces are known as the most traditional method of braces. During the production of metal braces, stainless steel brackets are used. These brackets are first mass-produced and then placed on a fixed metal wire and placed in the patient’s mouth. The purpose of metal braces is to align the teeth to the intended position after constant pressure is applied. The biggest advantage of metal braces is that it is a budget-friendly method, while the biggest disadvantage is that it is unfortunately the most visible orthodontic treatment.
2-Porcelain Braces: The difference of porcelain braces from metal braces is that the material used in bracket production is porcelain instead of metal. In this context, porcelain braces, which are less visible than metal braces, have an appearance close to the natural color of the tooth. This is the most important factor for patients to prefer porcelain braces in terms of aesthetics.
3-Lingual Braces: Lingual braces are also known as intraoral braces. These braces are placed on the inside of the mouth rather than the outside of the tooth, which is why they are quite popular among invisible braces methods. Unlike traditional metal or porcelain braces, which are not directly visible, lingual braces take a little longer to be placed during treatment.
4-Transparent Braces: Transparent braces, also known as Invisalign, are known as the most aesthetic dental braces solution. In the Invisalign dental braces treatment method, the patient is given a BPA-free transparent and removable appliance instead of metal braces or brackets. This appliance is perfectly matched to the size of the teeth and is designed to fit snugly on the teeth. Invisalign aligners, which are completely transparent, are almost invisible thanks to these features therefore, patients undergo a treatment process so comfortable that they do not even realize that they are undergoing orthodontic treatment.
Orthodontic treatment method used to treat teeth or TMJ disorders deteriorating over time is dental braces treatment. Before starting dental braces treatment, tooth decay is treated, any gum disease is treated and the enamel is cleaned and oral hygiene is ensured. The orthodontist then starts the dental braces treatment process. In general, patients think that getting dental braces is a painful procedure. However, the process of wearing dental braces does not cause pain. Dental braces are attached to the cleaned teeth with the following steps.
1-An appliance is inserted into the mouth to open the lips and provide an easy working environment for the orthodontics. This appliance is called an retractor.
2-While braces are being placed, saliva isolating materials are used to ensure the patient’s dry mouth from time to time. The patient’s mouth should be dry during the procedure.
3-The tooth is roughened by the dentist. Brackets adhere better to teeth that have been roughened.
4-Brackets are attached to all teeth with special adhesives one by one.
5-Adhesives leaking around the tooth are cleaned.
6-The adhesives are hardened and the braces are attached to all teeth.
The process of applying dental braces to both upper and lower jaws in a single session takes an average of 1 to 1.5 hours.
